Foundations - We are Built on His Name

Living Out God’s Name

Exodus 34:5-8

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” - A.W. Tozer

This week starts a new year - full of new beginnings and new challenges, new goals and new experiences, new relationships, new memories, new dreams, and new obstacles - and yet one thing that is unchanging is who God is.

This week we start a new series called Foundations. We will be looking at what is foundational to Who God is and how that should change every aspect of who we are.

This Sunday we look at Who God is. All of us have a picture of God in our minds. It might not be something we’ve ever written down, but it shows up in how we live. If God feels distant, we tend to live like we’re on our own; if God feels harsh, we relate to Him with fear or guilt; if God feels small or manageable, we treat Him casually.

What we believe about God shapes everything—how we pray, how we worship, how we handle stress, how we make decisions, and how we respond when life doesn’t go the way we planned.

The Bible doesn’t just tell us things about God to fill our heads with information, God reveals Who He truly is so that our lives would be transformed! When Scripture shows us that God is holy, it invites us to humility. When Scripture shows us that God is sovereign, it invites us to trust. When Scripture shows us that God is near, it invites us to relationship. When Scripture shows us that God is gracious, it invites us to surrender—not fear.

This week we will open up to Exodus 34 and see an encounter between God and Moses - and in this encounter, God introduces Himself. In this first introduction we see that God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. God introduces Himself with the same characteristics that are seen in the Father, in the Son, and in the Holy Spirit!

See you this Sunday at Likewise,

HEAD — What we’re invited to understand

God is not defined by our assumptions or experiences—He defines Himself.

In Exodus 34, God introduces His own name and character: merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. What we believe about who God is becomes the foundation for how we think, trust, worship, and live.

Let Scripture, not circumstances, shape your understanding of God.

HEART — What we’re invited to feel and receive

God’s character invites us not into fear, but into relationship.

He is not distant or harsh—He is compassionate and faithful. When we truly see God for who He is, our hearts can rest. We are met with grace instead of pressure, mercy instead of shame, and love instead of striving.

Allow your heart to respond to God as He truly is—not as you may have imagined Him to be.

HANDS— What we’re invited to live out

If this is who God is, then this is how we are called to live.

As people formed by a merciful and gracious God, we reflect His character in our patience, forgiveness, humility, and love toward others. Our lives become a living response to His name.

This week, pause and ask: What picture of God is shaping my reactions, my prayers, and my relationships?

Then intentionally reflect His grace and steadfast love in one tangible way.

Shepherd's Christmas

Date: Dec 21, 2025
Category: Hope, Missional, Bible, Christmas
Speaker: Josh Burt

This week at Likewise we get to see Christmas from Shepherd’s Perspective. We will look at the humble beginnings of a humble birth from the perspective of a humble position.

The position of shepherd was not a high class, nor highly regarded one. They were not the ones that we would normally think about for angels to come to, but they were not only the first to be told of Jesus’ birth and visitors to Jesus - they were the first to go tell about Jesus. One thing that is clear - Christmas is NOT meant to simply change “how” you are feeling or your emotions - but rather it is meant to change who you are.

Christmas is a time for being thankful for all we have been through, all that has changed and transformed us, and all that we are seeking God for, as we look to the new year.

This Sunday we will hear from our leaders, as they share from their heart - how God has taught them, lead them, transformed them, and how they are seeking Him in this year!
